Lacey cried over the phone and said she couldn’t believe what a wonderful person I was, which made me grit my teeth. Becky nodded coolly and said it was the logical thing to do, but I saw her tidy eyebrows go up just a little and I knew I’d surprised her. Carl Rockwell didn’t talk to me about it, but he told Pete he thought it was a wise decision and he was glad the two of us were working so well as partners. Grace told me to be careful about giving up too much and letting Pete have the upper hand in all things, be it relationship or riding. My mother texted back that it was very sweet and she hadn’t really expected me to ever do anything so generous for a boyfriend, or maybe have a boyfriend at all, but I was always surprising her. Ramon didn’t say anything, because all Ramon cared about was getting the horses fed and the stalls mucked. What we did with them, whether we sorted cows or jumped hay bales, was entirely our problem.

I wished more people were like Ramon.
